Banyumas Faces Shortage of 1,778 Elementary and Junior High School Teachers, Education Office Relies on KKN Students

BANYUMAS, KOMPAS.com - The Banyumas Regency Education Office (Disdik) is facing a shortage of teaching staff and requires 1,778 teachers for elementary and junior high school levels.

Widodo Sugiri, Head of Banyumas Disdik, explained that to address this issue, they have mapped out the teachers' teaching load.

"We have mapped the teaching hours for both elementary and junior high schools," Sugiri told reporters on Friday (9/18/2026).

A concrete step taken is to maximize the fulfillment of teaching hours for both homeroom teachers and subject teachers.

Additionally, Agus has established cooperation with several universities, including Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto (UMP), State Islamic University (UIN) Purwokerto, and Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) for a thematic Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program.

Relying on KKN Students

Students participating in KKN will be placed as teachers in schools experiencing teacher shortages.

He acknowledges that this measure cannot fully resolve the problem.

However, at least this program is expected to fill the gaps in teaching hours.

"At the very least, it can cover vacant teaching hours," Sugiri said.

The thematic KKN program will last for approximately six months.

Assigned students will be deployed proportionally.
